The Northern Lights

The Sámi people told their children and grandchildren stories to teach them practical skills, traditions and Sámi mythology, in which gods of nature also governed the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. The wind god decreed which way the wind blew and Ukko displayed his might during thunderstorms. Since time immemorial, the Northern Lights have aroused fear and interest in people. According to Finnish folk legend, the Northern Lights were caused by an arctic fox as it ran along the fells, catching its bushy tail in the snow drifts and sending a trail of sparks into the sky.
